How to install Windows Recovery Console for Windows XP

  • If you have XP disc with you, follow the steps below:

    1. Insert XP disc into cd rom

    2. Click Start button then click Run

    3. In the Run, type this command : ("X" is your cd rom driver letter)

       X:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

    4. It will install Windows Recovery Console automatically, just follow its instructions

    5. After the installation is finished, reboot your computer

    6. you will find a boot menu, choose the item Windows XP Recovery Console

    7. It will ask your administrator account password, just give it, then you will be under "WRC" mode.

  • If you do not have XP disc with you, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Start button then click Run

    2. In the Run, type this command :

       C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

    3. It will install Windows Recovery Console automatically, just follow its instructions

    4. After the installation is finished, reboot your computer

    5. you will find a boot menu, choose the item Windows XP Recovery Console

    6. It will ask your administrator account password, just give it, then you will be under "WRC" mode.

  • If you do not have XP cd nor find the "C:\i386" folder on your computer, you can make a bootable cd instead of the Recovery Console.
    First of all you need to download an .iso file from internet.

    This link can download a bootable cd ISO file: Bootable CD ISO download. This download file is from other website, so a virus check is suggested before use.

    Once you download an .iso file, you can use a cd burner program to burn it on a cd.

After Windows Recovery Console is installed, you will see a boot menu during next reboot

How to remove password prompt when Windows Recovery Console starts

When the Recovery Console starts it will ask for your Administrator password before continuing. In many cases you do not have this password or the Recovery Console will not recognize your Administrator's password. In these situations you can edit a registry setting so that the Recovery Console does not ask for a password. Please follow the steps below:

1. Click Start button then click Run

2. In the Run box, type Regedit, then click OK

3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

4. Highlight the key RecoveryConsole, double click on the item whose name is SecurityLevel

5. Change its value to 1

6. Close regedit and reboot computer
