Part one: How to make a recovery disc for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Part two: How to use the Windows recovery disc to remove stubborn malware file.

Part one: Make a recovery disc for Windows Vista and Windows 7

These days people who buy a new computer with Windows Vista or Windows 7 from the major manufacturers will find they are not given a Windows Vista or Windows 7 DVD with the new computer. Although in most situations you do not need that disc, sometimes if your computer experiences a serious problem which is caused by virus, spyware or an accident deletion of a important system file, you do need that disc to boot your computer and repair the problem.

From Windows Vista and later Windows OS, Microsoft provides a simple recovery center with automated tools which can fix most of the severe problems, unlike the xp days where you had to use "Recovery Console and command lines to do the job". With the recovery disk, you can diagnose the problem, do a system restore, check memory hardware errors, or delete a malware file which keeps coming back when deleting it under normal Windows running.

Steps to make a recovery disc:

Step one: Get the ISO image

The iso image file is more than 120MB, it can be downloaded from NeroSmart website, NeoSmart has made the image available as a torrent file:

Step two: Burning ISO image with ImgBurn

Once you get the ISO image file, you will need a way to burn it to a CD. You may already have a CD burning application such as Nero, if you do not have any CD burning application, check this simple tool (ImgBurn) here : Download ImgBurn

After download and installation, the ImgBurn application looks like :

Choose "Write image file to disc" option in ImgBurn main window, then follow the wizard, find the downloaded ISO image file in step one, start burning and wait for it is done.

Step three: Booting from the Windows Recovery CD

Now that you have created your Windows Recovery CD, test it to make sure that it will work in the event you need it one day. To do so, restart your computer with the CD in the drive. As the system reboots, follow the instructions on the screen to make your computer boot from the CD, you will see the following screens during the booting time:

Click "Repair your computer" when you see this image appears on your screen, you will enter the "System Recovery Options" window, now you can repair your computer with those tools.

Part two: How to use Windows Recovery Disc to remove stubborn malware files

Many people has ever experienced that a antispyware program detects a malware file but fails to delete it, if you try to delete it manually, you either get "Deleting is denied" or "This file is used by other process" message. But with Windows Recovery Disc, it is easy to delete any file whatever it is hidden or read-only. In the following example, we will delete a file named "badfile.exe", which is located in Windows system folder, which is "C:\Windows\System32", so the full pathof the file is : C:\Windows\System32\badfile.exe . You will type some commands to remove it in the command prompt window.

Step one: Boot Windows with the recovery disc, wait for the "System Recovery Options" window

Step two: Click "Command Prompt" to open a command prompt window as follow:

Vista command prompt window

Step three(Optional): Remove hidden or read-only attributes of the file using the command "attrib".

The format of command "attrib" is:

attrib -h -r C:\windows\system32\badfile.exe

The following image demonstrating the usage of the "attrib" command. If the command is done successful, it will return nothing, otherwise it will return some error message.

Usage of attrib

Step four: Delete the file using the command "del".

The format of command "del" is:

del C:\Windows\System32\badfile.exe
